DICOM means Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine and is a standard for the exchange of medical images and image related information (patient data, worklist, procedure data, and reports) between various computer based devices and applications over a network or over a physical data media.
The DICOM standard is supported and enhanced by the IHE profiles (IHE = Integrated Healthcare Environment) describing the recommended behaviour of the devices and applications involved in complex workflows.
